Lecture - Week 03

Lecture - Week 03: Deliberate Practice & Learning Through Imitation

Overview

Today marks the official start of your weekly habits. This lecture introduces the semester’s core learning method: learning through imitation. From this week forward, every production lecture will approach topics through the lens of studying, analyzing, and recreating the work of professionals.

Topics

Habits Begin Today

  • Your habits officially start this week
  • Setting expectations for documentation
  • How weekly check-ins will work
  • The compound effect: small actions over time

What Is Deliberate Practice?

  • Practice vs. deliberate practice
  • The role of focused attention
  • Feedback loops and iteration
  • Why “just doing it” isn’t enough

Learning Through Imitation

  • How masters have always learned (apprenticeship, copying, study)
  • Imitation as a tool, not plagiarism
  • The progression: Copy → Understand → Adapt → Create
  • Why analyzing others’ work accelerates your growth

The Imitation Framework

  • Listen/Watch: Active, critical consumption
  • Analyze: Break down what you hear/see
  • Recreate: Attempt to reproduce it
  • Reflect: What did you learn? What’s still unclear?

Applying This to Music Production

  • How we’ll use this framework all semester
  • Preview of upcoming topics through the imitation lens
  • Building a reference library
  • Documentation as learning
