Lecture - Week 04
Lecture - Week 04: Sound Design — Recreate Iconic Sounds
Overview
Sound design is the art of creating sounds from scratch. This week, we approach synthesis through imitation: by reverse-engineering iconic sounds, you’ll learn the principles that make them work—and develop your own sound design vocabulary.
Topics
The Imitation Approach to Sound Design
- Why recreating sounds teaches more than making presets
- Listening critically to production sounds
- Breaking down what you hear into synthesis parameters
- The skill of “hearing” a signal flow
Sound Design Fundamentals (Review)
- Oscillators: waveforms and their character
- Filters: shaping frequency content
- Envelopes: controlling change over time
- LFOs and modulation: adding movement
Iconic Sounds to Study
- Classic synth sounds and their origins
- Recognizing synthesis techniques by ear
- The sounds that defined genres
- Modern sounds worth studying
The Recreation Process
- Listen: Isolate the sound, loop it, study it
- Describe: Put into words what you hear
- Hypothesize: What oscillators? What filter? What modulation?
- Build: Start from init, build step by step
- Compare: A/B your version against the original
- Iterate: Refine until it’s close
Tools for This Week
- Vital (or your synth of choice)
- Reference tracks with isolated/clear synth sounds
- Spectrum analyzers for visual feedback
In-Class Activities
-
Sound Analysis (15 min)
- Listen to three iconic synth sounds
- As a class, describe what we hear
- Hypothesize the synthesis approach
-
Recreation Challenge (35 min)
- Choose one sound to recreate
- Work in Vital from an initialized patch
- Focus on getting the character, not perfection
-
Compare and Discuss (10 min)
- A/B your recreation against the original
- What did you get right? What’s still off?
- Share discoveries with the class
Resources
Connection to Wednesday
Feedback Session: Present your habit documentation from Week 3. Share your reference track library and any early observations.
Assignment Preview
Assignment - Sound Recreation
- Recreate 2-3 iconic sounds from reference tracks
- Document your process (screenshots of signal flow)
- Reflect: What did you learn about synthesis through imitation?
- Include habit check-in
