Lecture - Week 05

Lecture - Week 05: Mixing — Deconstruct a Pro Mix

Overview

Great mixes don’t happen by accident. This week, we learn mixing by deconstructing professional mixes—identifying the choices engineers made and understanding why they work. Then we’ll apply those insights to our own work.

Topics

The Imitation Approach to Mixing

  • Why reference tracks are essential
  • Active listening vs. passive listening
  • Training your ears through comparison
  • Building a mental library of “what good sounds like”

Deconstructing a Mix

  • Balance: What’s loud? What’s quiet? Why?
  • Panning: How is the stereo field used?
  • Frequency: Where does each element sit?
  • Depth: What’s upfront? What’s distant?
  • Dynamics: What moves? What stays steady?

Reference Track Methodology

  • Choosing appropriate references
  • Level-matching for honest comparison
  • A/B switching techniques
  • What to listen for at each stage

Mixing Principles Through Examples

  • How pros handle low end
  • Vocal treatment patterns
  • Drum processing approaches
  • The role of effects in creating space

Applying What You Hear

  • Translating analysis into action
  • “My mix should feel like X because…”
  • Knowing when to break the rules
  • The iterative comparison process

In-Class Activities

  1. Mix Deconstruction (25 min)

    • Listen to a professional mix together
    • Map out: balance, panning, frequency, depth
    • Discuss the engineer’s likely choices
  2. Reference Matching (25 min)

    • Open one of your projects
    • Import a reference track (level-matched)
    • Identify three differences and attempt to close the gap
  3. Ear Training (10 min)

    • Quick frequency identification exercise
    • Practice hearing EQ moves

Resources

Assignment - Reference Mix Analysis

  • Choose a professional mix in your genre
  • Write a detailed deconstruction (balance, panning, frequency, depth, dynamics)
  • Apply 3 insights to one of your own mixes
  • Include habit check-in
